New York Stop Hacks and Improve Electronic Data Security Act (S5575B) — New York State Legislature

New York's data security statute: anyone holding private information about a New York resident must maintain reasonable administrative, technical and physical safeguards, with a lighter set spelled out for small businesses. Entities already regulated under Gramm-Leach-Bliley, HIPAA or 23 NYCRR 500 are deemed compliant. It also widened the state's breach notification duty to cover mere access, not only acquisition.
