The strictest biometric statute in the United States, and the only one with a private right of action: a private entity may not collect a fingerprint, face or voice template without written notice and consent, may not sell or profit from it, and must publish a retention and destruction schedule. Damages run per violation, which is why it drives most US biometric litigation. What we watch here is legislation, not the consolidated text of the Act: bills in the Illinois General Assembly that amend BIPA, as tracked by OpenStates. A new amending bill, or an amendment that rewrites a bill's synopsis, shows up on this page; a bill being signed into law is not flagged as a separate event.
